Mount
George County, Mississippi
This cemetery is
located in eastern George County, Mississippi. You will be on Highway
98 going
East toward
will pass the Mississippi Highway Department Weight
Station , you will travel about 500 yards and the intersection with
Moffett
Road will now be
on your right. Take
this right hand turn onto
the church and cemetery will be on your

good
condition.
and Cemetery were first
located in Shipman community next to the railroad. The original church
was
established in 1898 by Rev. Dave Cook. The
Church was relocated to it’s present location in 1946, by Rev.
W.R.
Nobles. The original Mount Olive cemetery by the railroad is referred
to as
Mount Olive Cemetery #1, and the present cemetery at their new location
is
referred to as Mount Olive Cemetery #2.Through the woods it is probably
only a
couple of miles between these two cemeteries, however by road it is
nearly 4
miles. The #1 cemetery is in need of a good cleaning, as Hurricane
Katrina
made
a mess of the woods. Prior to the hurricane the cemetery had been
cleaned and
grass planted in it. There is no longer a road in to where the cemetery
is
located, you must walk about a half mile (East) down the side of the
railroad
tracks (where
Mt.
Cemetery
was walked by Mr.
Clarence Talbert and Jimmy
Trussell, the #2
was taken from all legible headstone inscriptions and
temporary grave markers, information taken from original church records
will be
noted. Mr. Talberts
Great-Great Grandmother , Mrs. Fannie Whigham (#1) is
buried here and was sold into slavery in
burials are located.
(#1) for the original railroad location and (#2) for the new
relocated
cemetery location. Those buried in the old part or #1 Mt. Olive
cemetery that
did not have a headstone or temporary marker
but were verified through church records as to their being
buried there
will be marked (as per church records).
There were many unmarked graves in this
cemetery that we were not able to identify.
I want to thank Mr. and Mrs.
Clarence Talbert and the church for permission to survey their
cemeteries and
for all the information they provided.
