O'Neal
Cemetery
George County, Mississippi
Travel north on
Highway 57 for about .3 tenths of a mile, where you will see Deep Creek Road
on your left. Take this
left hand turn and now go 2.5 miles and the
O'Neal Cemetery will be on your
left. This is a private family cemetery and upkeep is provided by them.
The
cemetery is surrounded by a chain link fence and has a large
American Flag
displayed along with the Mississippi
State flag inside
the
main gate. There are also several small American Flags displayed around
the
cemetery and on the sign.
There is a plaque under the cemetery sign which
reads, "Dedicated to the memory of Master Sgt. Sean M. Cooley, born
Apr. 18,
1969, Killed in Iraq
Feb. 3, 2005".
Sean is one of those interred here in this cemetery. Sean was a
member of the 150th Combat Engineer Battalion from Lucedale,
Mississippi, he was the 21st
soldier with
Mississippi ties killed in the
war on terror and the fifth Mississippi National Guard Soldier to die
in Iraq.
Sean
started his military career as a Navy Seabee. Shortly after his
death I was
sent several pictures showing the "Cooley Chapel" named in Sean's honor
in Iraq,
as well
as two soldier's being baptized in front of the Chapel. He gave the
ultimate
sacrifice for these freedoms we have today, and we will always be in
debt to
him and the many other veterans that have sacrificed themselves for us
all.
I walked the cemetery on the 5th
of January 2008, and all information was taken from headstone
inscriptions.
Thanks to the O'Neal Family for letting me walk and transcribe their
family
cemetery.
